LaTanya Butler has been named the new principal of Philip Simmons High School. Christopher Buchholz will transition to serve as the new principal of Cane Bay High School.
For the past three years, Butler has served as principal of Berkeley Middle School. Prior to that, she spent eight years as an assistant principal at Goose Creek High School, where she was recognized in Spring 2022 as the Berkeley County School District Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year. Butler began her career as a classroom teacher at both the middle and high school levels before moving into administration in 2014.
"I am honored and excited to join the Philip Simmons High School community," said Butler. "My nine years in high school education—including three alongside Mr. Buchholz—were deeply rewarding, and I look forward to bringing that passion to PSH. I’m committed to supporting our students and families while building on the strong foundation already in place to help every student succeed beyond graduation."
Butler holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Teaching in Secondary Education from the University of South Carolina. In 2014, she earned a Master of Educational Leadership from Charleston Southern University.
