This week our 4th graders got to experience an artist in residence, Andres Liviola, through Engaging Creative Minds. Andres Liviola is a seasoned musician and educator who specializes in traditional African drumming as a lead member of WO'SE Drum and Dance Company. Science and Music standards were combined to gain a deeper understanding of energy. Students explored scientific concepts surrounding sound waves as an effect of energy being transferred from one object to another. Thank you to ECM and Andres for this great experience!

Due to forecasts for continued severe weather resulting in area power outages, and concerns regarding impacts on roads and facilities throughout the evening, Berkeley County School District (BCSD) schools and offices will operate on a 2-hour weather delay on Wednesday, January 10. There will be no before school care programs, but after school programs and athletics will resume normal operations on Wednesday. Bus riders will report to bus stops two hours later than their regularly scheduled time. Information concerning school start times and bell schedules when operating on a 2-hour weather delay is available on the BCSD website here: https://www.bcsdschools.net/o/bcsd/page/school-bell-schedules. District officials are continuing to work closely with the Berkeley County Emergency Management Department, local power providers, and law enforcement to monitor the weather and potential impact on the county. Officials are also receiving regular updates from the National Weather Service. As safety and security is our number one priority, all decisions are made with the safety of students, staff, and families in mind.

Fourth grade had an amazing time at Old Santee Canal Park. We learned about how the Native Americans of SC used plants, animals, and the land in order to survive. We made “No Face Dolls” out of corn husks that serve as a reminder to Native Americans to never think they are better than anyone else. We learned how indigo, a cash crop from SC during the 1700s, was cultivated for its dye. We were able to use some to dye a piece of cloth. We also toured the museum of artifacts from the American Revolution and checked out their wildlife while we were there.
