Berkeley High School Baseball State Championship Recognition at State House
Today, we celebrated more than a victory on the diamond — we honor a group of young men who turned adversity into legacy. It is with immense pride that we recognize the Berkeley High School Stags — the 2024–2025 South Carolina Class AAAAA Division II Baseball State Champions — who brought home the program’s second state title in just four seasons.
Led by Head Coach Landy Cox, this team embodied the spirit of resilience and brotherhood. While the 2022 title team was loaded with talent and expectations, this championship was different — forged not by dominance, but by determination. At one point in the season, the Stags were hovering around .500. Some nights it was the pitching, other nights it was the hitting — but they never quit. They stayed together. They found their rhythm. And when it mattered most, they became unstoppable.
Berkeley entered the playoffs and never looked back, going a perfect 7-0 and finishing the season on an 11-game win streak. In a best-of-three title series against Upper State power Catawba Ridge, the Stags showed grit and grace. After a thrilling 2-1 victory in 10 innings at Jim Bradley Field, they closed out the series with a dominant 9-4 win in Fort Mill to sweep the championship.
Behind a clean defensive effort and relentless small-ball pressure, the Stags piled up 12 hits, including a 3-for-4 day from Devon Hogue and a momentum-seizing two-RBI single by Bryce Olheiser. Starter Keller Wofford, a lifelong Berkeley kid, pitched with poise and purpose, earning the win in front of a sea of blue and gold who made the nearly three-hour trip feel like home. Hunter Morris shut the door in relief, sealing the deal for a team that refused to be denied.
Coach Landy Cox — now a two-time state champion and a symbol of consistent leadership in Stag Country — called it best: “These are just a bunch of scrappy, hard-nosed kids. A bunch of dogs. A bunch of grinders. These are just blue-collar kids. That’s all it is. It’s about the team.”
And this team was special. They weren’t perfect — they were persistent. They didn’t always shine — but they always showed up. And when the pressure was highest, they played their best baseball of the season.
With this victory, the Stags capped off a 22-10 season and helped Berkeley High School make history, joining the girls basketball team as state champions in the same academic year — a first in the school’s 113-year history. Together, they reminded our community and the state of South Carolina what it means to be a Stag: proud, tough, relentless, and united.
To Coach Cox, his staff, and every young man who put on that jersey — thank you for reminding us that championships aren’t handed out. They’re earned — with heart, hustle, and heritage.
Congratulations, Stags — STATE CHAMPIONS once again!
